Malta Airport Transportation Overview

Malta International Airport (MLA), the sole air terminal for the Maltese Islands, is located in Luqa, approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of the capital, Valletta. As of 2025 and 2026, the transport infrastructure has undergone significant restructuring to accommodate increased passenger numbers. Transit options include a redesigned public bus network, regulated white taxis, and international ride-sharing services.

Public Bus Network (Tallinja)

Following a major network overhaul in April 2025, the previous express "X" routes (X1, X2, X3, X4) have been replaced with a more segmented system to improve reliability. Public transport is operated by Malta Public Transport under the brand Tallinja.

Key Airport Routes

  • Valletta: Routes 88 and TD4 provide direct links to the capital's main terminus.
  • Sliema & St. Julian's: Route TD2 (Direct) and TD3 serve these major residential and commercial hubs.
  • Northern Hubs (Mellieħa/Ċirkewwa): Route TD1 and Route 214 connect the airport to the north and the Gozo ferry terminal.
  • Central Areas: Route 208 and Route 211 serve residential zones like Birkirkara and Gzira.

Fares and Payment Methods

Cash is no longer the preferred method; passengers are encouraged to use contactless credit/debit cards or pre-purchased cards.

  • Single Journey (Standard): 2.50 EUR ($2.63 USD, Jan 2026). Valid for two hours including transfers.
  • Tallinja Direct (TD) Routes: 3.00 EUR ($3.15 USD, Jan 2026). These are faster routes with fewer stops.
  • Explore Card (7 Days): 25.00 EUR ($26.25 USD, Jan 2026) for unlimited travel on all routes.
  • 12 Single Journeys Card: 21.00 EUR ($22.05 USD, Jan 2026).

For long-term residents, a personalized Tallinja Card offers free travel on most standard routes after a one-time registration fee of 25.00 EUR ($26.25 USD, Jan 2026). More details are available on the official Tallinja website.

Taxis and Ride-Sharing Platforms

Taxis offer 24/7 door-to-door service and are the most efficient option for those carrying significant luggage. In Malta, there is a distinction between official government-regulated taxis and private ride-sharing services.

Official White Taxis

White taxis are available immediately outside the Arrivals Hall. They operate on a fixed-fare system to prevent price fluctuations based on traffic. Passengers must purchase a pre-paid ticket from the taxi booth located in the Welcomers' Hall before boarding.

  • To Valletta/Floriana: 17.00 EUR ($17.85 USD, Jan 2026).
  • To Sliema/St. Julian's: 20.00 EUR ($21.00 USD, Jan 2026).
  • To Mellieħa/Ċirkewwa: 33.00 EUR - 37.00 EUR ($34.65 - $38.85 USD, Jan 2026).

Ride-Sharing Apps

Uber, Bolt, and the local eCabs are widely used. Unlike white taxis, these must be booked via their respective mobile applications. Prices are dynamic and may be lower than white taxi rates during off-peak hours.

Important: Ride-sharing vehicles are generally not permitted to wait directly at the terminal curb. Passengers should follow the signs to the Park East multi-story car park, where a designated pickup zone is located.

Car Rentals and Shuttle Services

For those requiring a vehicle for the duration of their stay, the Car Rental Center is located in the Park East building, accessible via a covered tunnel from the main terminal. Major international brands (Hertz, Avis, Europcar) and local providers (Aquarius, Princess) operate here.

Shared Shuttles

Shared shuttle services can be pre-booked online through providers like Suntransfers or Terravision. These typically cost between 6.00 EUR ($6.30 USD, Jan 2026) and 10.00 EUR ($10.50 USD, Jan 2026) per person, depending on the destination and number of stops. Private transfers can also be arranged via the Malta International Airport portal.
